He switched to slip-ons about two years ago. Not because he liked them — he just got tired of the little production that came with bending down to tie his shoes. Back too stiff. Hips locked up. Easier to stop fighting it. He coaches his son’s weekend soccer, drives 45 minutes each way to work, and ends most days the same way: stiff from the commute, stiff from the chair, and just done.

He wasn’t in pain, exactly. Just limited. The kind of limited you stop noticing because you’ve adapted around it for so long. You park closer to the entrance. You get up from the couch in stages — hands on the armrest, pause, then stand. You stop reaching for things on the bottom shelf, and at some point you stop noticing that you stopped. You take the elevator not because you’re lazy, but because stairs have quietly started to cost something.

There’s another version of this. She’d been managing a hip that catches when she gets out of the car — that sharp little grab on the left side, every single time. She’d chalked it up to age, to long days at a desk, to just getting older. Her doctor hadn’t flagged anything structural. She wasn’t injured. She does yoga twice a week, has for years, and it helps — but it doesn’t fix the catch. So she’d been doing what most people do: stretching a little in the morning, trying to remember to walk more, and mostly just working around it.

That guy with the slip-ons came in for an  assisted stretching session  a few months ago. He left without making a single dramatic statement about it. He just said, “huh — I can feel my hamstrings again.”

That’s usually how it goes.

Why foam rolling doesn’t actually fix anything

Here’s the honest version of what’s happening when you’re chronically stiff:

Your nervous system has decided that the current range of motion is the safe range of motion. Tight hips, locked-up lower back, the pull you feel down your leg from sciatica — those aren’t injuries waiting to happen. They’re your body drawing boundaries it doesn’t trust you to cross.

Foam rolling feels like progress because it gives you something to do. It loosens the tissue temporarily. But it doesn’t change the neuromuscular pattern underneath. An hour later, you’re exactly where you started.

The research backs this up.  Studies on PNF stretching  — which stands for proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, but you don’t need to remember that — show that contract-relax techniques produce significantly greater range of motion gains than static stretching alone. The reason is simple: you’re working with the nervous system instead of against it. You’re not just pulling on a muscle. You’re teaching the body that a new position is safe.

That’s what a coach can do that you can’t do on your own. You can’t provide resistance and release tension at the same time. You can’t feel what’s actually restricted versus what’s just uncomfortable. And honestly, you won’t push past the point where it starts to feel weird — because that’s exactly the point where the real work happens.

Most of the time, the spot where it hurts isn’t the spot causing the problem. Tight hip flexors pull the pelvis forward, which loads the lower back. A restricted piriformis presses on the sciatic nerve and sends pain down the leg. Thoracic stiffness limits how far the shoulder can move, so the neck and lower back compensate. You’ve been treating the symptom. The actual restriction is usually one joint upstream.

What actually happens in a session

You lie down on a table. That’s the first thing.

A coach walks through where you’re tight, where you’re compensating, and what you’ve been dealing with. Tight hips from sitting all day. Lower back that grabs after an hour in the car. Sciatica that flares when you’re on your feet too long. Posture that’s been pulling forward for years. We’ve seen all of it.

Then the coach moves you through a series of positions — guiding your leg, your hip, your shoulder through ranges of motion you either can’t get to on your own or have been avoiding without realizing it. You push against the coach’s resistance for a few seconds. You release. The joint opens. You feel the difference immediately.

The session is 50 minutes. One-on-one. No one else in the room.

It’s not relaxation. It’s not spa stuff. It’s targeted work on the specific patterns that are actually limiting you. Most people are surprised by what they notice in the 24 hours after — not sore like a hard workout, more like something that was braced finally got let go. A tightness they’d stopped registering is just gone. They sleep differently. They get out of the car differently.

The people who come in are not a single type. A project manager from Wrentham who commutes to Boston three days a week and feels it in her hips by Wednesday. A guy in his late 40s who used to run 5Ks and now finds a mile costs too much — not injured, just eroded. Someone who trains three times a week, lifts consistently, but still feels perpetually beat up and can’t figure out why. And people managing old injuries that mostly healed but never quite resolved, who’ve been quietly compensating around them for years. What they have in common is that whatever they’d been doing on their own wasn’t moving the needle.

If you’ve been dealing with sciatica, tight hips, or a stiff lower back that doesn’t respond to anything you’ve tried, this is worth trying.  We also run group training sessions  if you want to keep moving after you can actually move again.
