Every Session Is Coached — Why I Believe Structure Beats Chaos

A few months back, Craig walked into Basecamp getting ready for a HYROX race in Boston. He was motivated — but completely lost. He didn’t know where to start, how to pace, or even what “race ready” felt like.

When he’d run, he’d bolt out the door like a bat out of hell. So instead of giving him a cue, I literally stepped in front of him mid-run and made him slow down. On some days I’d even run with him so he could feel what a real race pace was.

And that was the moment it clicked for him:

This whole thing isn’t about going all-out. It’s about finding your pace, learning your body, and training with intention.

That’s the power of structure.

Let me explain.

I Know What Chaos Feels Like — Because I Lived It

Before all of this — before Basecamp, before coaching, before HYROX — I started at Planet Fitness.

Why?

Because I was miserable.

I was working night shift at a distribution center in Belton, Missouri. My sleep schedule was wrecked. I’d go to bed when the sun came up, wake up at 2 p.m., eat garbage, party too much, and try to hide from how unhappy I was.

One day I said, “Screw it,” and signed up for a gym membership.

Did I know anything about exercise?

Not even a little.

So I did what most people do:

I wandered around.

I copied whatever someone else happened to be doing.

I’d waste 1–2 hours, feel exhausted, and see basically no results.

Sure, I got good at pull-ups. But everything else? Not so much.

That’s chaos. That’s guessing. That’s surviving, not progressing.

Things changed the day I walked into CrossFit Nexus — my first experience with coached, structured fitness.

The difference was night and day.

My workouts were planned.

My movements were intentionally chosen.

I had progressions that matched the level I was actually at.

And I saw in 45 minutes what I couldn’t get in two hours on my own.

I lost 50 pounds.

I gained 30 pounds of muscle.

I went from 230 to 170.

And more importantly — I became someone I actually respected.

I learned to lean into discomfort.

I learned what real training felt like.

I learned what structure can do.

Chaos Wastes Time. Structure Builds You.

Here’s what I see every day when people train without guidance:

  • Poor movement patterns
  • Wasted reps
  • Confusion
  • Inconsistency
  • Fear of doing it wrong
  • Loss of drive because there’s no direction

And the biggest thing?

Wasted time. Lost results.

With structure, your results can happen in half the time — and with a fraction of the frustration.

When people walk into Basecamp, they instantly feel it:

The confidence.

The clarity.

The sense that they’re finally doing something that actually works.

Coaching is intentional movement.

It’s the difference between guessing and progressing.

And I’ll be honest — even as a business owner and a professional, I have a trainer.

Because structure isn’t something you outgrow.

It’s something that grows you.

The Real Message

Coached training is worth the investment because you are worth the investment.

Your time, your effort, your health — they deserve direction, not chaos.

Show up.

Get coached.

Move with intention.

And watch how fast things change.
